5toi: Pilot action to foster sustainable NEXUS Innovation and co-development in the Mediterranean and Africa

The 5TOI_4EWAS consortium has developed an interesting document about co-develop of actions targeted on specific published in solutions. In an integrated and synergetic way, as NEXUS approach learned, these solutions could be adapted to social, societal and economic needs in those geographical regions most affected by climate change and development challenges. With this respect, open innovation can arise from multiple sources or multiple paths such as: thinking with a different perspective, integrating different technologies to solve integrated and co-related problems, organizing new institutions of governance, writing new narratives regarding development, integrating and using tested and approved technologies and tools in new contexts, and educating citizens at the local level. The quintuple helix model’s application is mandatory for adapting generic technologies to specific regional targets and the latter, in turn, constitutes a strong driver of innovation in general. In this process, North-South, as well as South-South and public-private collaborations, should prove beneficial to all parties and favor the emergence of a common regional clean-tech market, while a coordinated EU policies is an essential factor for establishing and maintaining virtuous dynamics to reach this objective. These policies are supported by several studies and activities done in recent years regarding the need to progress on the policy agenda through a water, food, and energy nexus approach. From what’s described above, the strong interrelation between energy, food, and water for a sustainable and climate resilient environment, and the need for more vigorous efforts in the African landscape is clear.

These and others interesting thematic will be published soon on 5TOI_4EAWS website and submitted at the attention of European Commission, moving the first step towards the developed of Policies Programmes, cooperation activities and Innovations actions in Sothern Mediterranean Neighbourhood.
