Lebanon’s Forgotten Crops, the World’s Next Superfood: How Agro  Cedrus Is Turning Carob into a Global Ingredient

A Lebanese agri-food company is building an international ingredients platform from the carob trees and aromatic plants that have grown in the Mediterranean for millennia, and putting small farmers at the heart of it.

Carob trees have dotted the Lebanese and Mediterranean landscape for thousands of years: resilient to drought, deeply rooted in local heritage, and strikingly undervalued… until now. Agro Cedrus is changing that, one ingredient at a time.

Long before the global food industry discovered “clean-label” and “plant-based” as marketing categories, Lebanon’s carob trees and aromatic plants were quietly offering exactly that: natural, functional, climate-resilient ingredients grown without the environmental cost of industrial agriculture.

Agro Cedrus, a Lebanese climate-smart agri-food company, is turning that quiet abundance into a scalable business, and Mediterranean ingredient platform with global ambitions.

The company transforms carob and aromatic plants into high-value natural food products and functional ingredients: sweeteners, dietary fibers, and functional components in growing demand from food manufacturers, health brands, and export markets worldwide. The business model is as thoughtful as the products themselves. By sourcing from small local farmers, Agro Cedrus creates economic value deep in the agricultural supply chain, not just at the finished-product level.

The Opportunity Nobody Was Claiming

The global market for natural, plant-based ingredients is expanding rapidly. Consumers and brands alike are moving away from synthetic additives and commodity sweeteners toward cleaner, traceable, and functional alternatives. Carob, a naturally sweet, caffeine-free, fiber-rich legume, fits this demand almost perfectly. Yet in Lebanon and the wider MENA region, the crop has remained largely unprocessed and undervalued for decades.

Agro Cedrus identified this gap not as a niche, but as a platform opportunity. Rather than producing a single product, founder Georges built a company designed from the start to supply multiple high-value ingredient categories, all rooted in the same climate-resilient, regionally native raw materials.

Natural Sweeteners

Carob-derived alternatives to refined sugar and synthetic sweeteners, clean-label and traceable.

Dietary Fibers

Functional fiber extracts with applications in food formulation, health products, and nutraceuticals.

Aromatic Ingredients

High-value extracts from Mediterranean aromatic plants, supplying specialty food and wellness markets.

“We address the under-valorization of climate-resilient crops while creating sustainable income for small farmers and supplying growing global demand for clean-label, plant-based ingredients.”

Challenges Faced, Current Focus, and ScaleSmart’s Support

For Agro Cedrus, the most transformative work inside the program has been building greater financial clarity to support its growth ambitions. Upon entering ScaleSmart, the team focused on strengthening its financial model and validating a credible path toward regional and international expansion. Since then, the program has helped Agro Cedrus make more informed strategic decisions, refine its growth priorities, and develop a clearer roadmap for scaling its operations and preparing for future investment opportunities.

Investment roadmap taking shape

As Agro Cedrus looks ahead, the team is building a clear roadmap for sustainable growth and international expansion. This shift, from a diversified local producer to a focused international ingredient supplier, is at the heart of what makes Agro Cedrus compelling to investors. It is not just a food company; it is an infrastructure play for the growing clean-label ingredient economy, built on some of the most resilient and sustainable raw materials the Mediterranean has to offer.

Why Carob, Why Now

As climate pressures intensify across the Mediterranean and MENA region, carob stands out as one of the most drought-tolerant, low-input crops available. It requires no irrigation in many growing conditions, thrives in poor soils, and sequesters carbon effectively. At the same time, global food industry demand for natural sweeteners and plant-based functional ingredients is accelerating, driven by regulatory pressure on added sugars, consumer demand for clean labels, and the rapid growth of functional food categories. Agro Cedrus is positioned at the convergence of both trends.

Looking Ahead

As Agro Cedrus prepares for its upcoming investment and matchmaking opportunities, the team is refining its growth story around a solid financial foundation, a clear roadmap for expansion, and a business model designed to meet the expectations of international partners and investors.

Looking ahead, Agro Cedrus is focused on strengthening its position as more than a producer of carob-based ingredients. Backed by its established agrifood production capabilities and strong relationships across the agricultural value chain, the company is laying the groundwork to expand its portfolio of locally sourced, high-value ingredients. While its immediate focus is on scaling its current offering, this foundation also creates opportunities to diversify into additional crops and product lines over time, reinforcing Agro Cedrus’s ambition to become a leading Mediterranean supplier of natural ingredients.

“Our ambition is to be clearly recognized not only as a local producer, but as a Mediterranean supplier of high-value natural ingredients, a scalable platform aligned with international demand and investment expectations.”
