Diwama is utilizing digital technologies to create disruption in the waste management industry by developing a computer vision software for waste detection and analysis. The system consists of a camera combined with the intelligent decision-making ability of a neural network (artificial intelligence algorithm) acting like a human eye and brain respectively. The neural network is trained to recognize the different categories of waste based on what the camera sees in real time.

The software has the potential to be deployed across the whole waste value chain; from collection, to transportation, sorting and treatment. As a start, Diwama is targeting the challenges faced in sorting and recycling facilities. With its system installed over sorting belts, Diwama will enable waste tracking and characterization, detection of inefficiencies in machinery and labor tasks, and auditing on sorting operations. Using the sensory powers of IoT, collected data will be displayed on a dashboard enabling facility managers to take data driven decisions to increase material recovery thus revenues and cut down costs, all while having a smooth and optimized operation.
