Fab Lab Supervisor

Overview

The Fab Lab Supervisor is responsible of providing first‐line technical support and maintenance of the IT infrastructure, the machines, and tools for on‐site fabrication to ensure optimal operation of the Fab Lab.

The Fab Lab Supervisor works closely with designers, techies, and makers and engages with Fab Lab users to explore the potential of digital fabrication equipment and processes such as Laser Cutting, CNC Milling and 3D Printing. The Fab Lab Supervisor, as a member of the Fab Lab team, is also responsible of creating a community of makers.

SCOPE OF WORK:

Key Responsibilities

  • Ensure the Fab Lab is kept in good working order. This will involve troubleshooting, repairing, maintaining, calibrating, inspecting, and testing all equipment to ensure the Fab Lab space allows for optimal usability.
  • Maintain and update the lab’s infrastructure, equipment, and software configurations.
  • Ensure availability, applicability and safety of equipment, parts, and materials.
  • Oversee the safety, compliance, and scheduling in the Fab Lab.
  • Initiate, coordinate, and promote Fab Lab activities and training workshops, various events, etc.
  • Provide practical and technical support for individuals and groups of Fab Lab users and train them on operating the machines.
  • Advise and assist entrepreneurs within the scope of relevant expertise and competencies.
  • Coordinate for the Fab Lab visits and organize the needed lab tours and related events.
  • Develop and modify curriculum content.
  • Manage service contracts for available machines and equipment.
  • Ensures availability of lab resources to support all users and projects.
  • Abide by the sustainability and growth plan set for the Fab Lab and contribute to developing it.
  • Maintain contact with the international FabLab community to remain up to date on the latest FabLab innovations.
  • Stay updated on the most recent equipment and propose purchases that will improve the functionality of the Fab Lab, when appropriate.

      Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

      • Education: Technical degree/BS in engineering or other STEAM-related fields or related experience in the field with significant technical experience. Digital Fabrication/ manufacturing certificate is a big plus.
      • Experience: A minimum of 3 years progressively professional experience providing support services in digital fabrication and/or experience managing or being part of a team of a Fab Lab, maker space, or a factory with knowledge in the following:
        • 2D and 3D files editing including 3D models, 2D layouts, and 2D images (convert, export, scale, and edit files).
        • Digital fabrication equipment and rapid prototyping technologies and processes such as 3D printing, vinyl cutting, laser etching/cutting, CNC milling, and other related equipment.
        • Wood works and post-processing/post-production works including assembly.
      • Language: Fluent in Arabic and English, French is a plus.
