Over the years, Berytech has partnered with numerous organizations who have trusted us to manage or implement their programs in Lebanon and the region. 

The European Union dedicates around 10% of its budget to external action. They provide funding in the form of grants, contracts, and budget support to partner countries. They also work hand-in-hand with international organizations, private bodies and EU member countries to increase the impact of our support.

Entrepreneurship and Innovation Support in the Mediterranean

Berytech Foundation is the official partner of THE NEXT SOCIETY in Lebanon, an open community of changemakers, entrepreneurs, investors, corporates, NGOs, public and private innovation, research and economic development hubs from Europe and 7 Mediterranean countries: Algeria, Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon, Morocco, Palestine and Tunisia. It aims at mobilising, promoting and reinforcing innovation ecosystems and economic development in the MENA region. Launched by ANIMA Investment Network, THE NEXT SOCIETY initiated a four-year action plan (2017-2020), co-funded by the European Union up to 90% for a global amount of EUR 7.8 million, which impacts 4 levels of the innovation ecosystem: Improve policy frameworks, Foster start-up successes, Promote and internationalise clusters, and Accelerate technology transfer towards the enterprise.

Horizon 2020 is the biggest EU Research and Innovation programme ever with nearly €80 billion of funding available over 7 years (2014 to 2020) – in addition to the private investment that this money will attract. It promises more breakthroughs, discoveries and world-firsts by taking great ideas from the lab to the market.

Women Empowerment

Berytech Foundation contributed to the first European community connecting business ecosystems and providing them with mentoring tools to support women entrepreneurs in the digital sector. The Women Web Entrepreneurs Hub project received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme.

Ag, Food, and Renewable Energy Open Innovation and Research

Berytech Foundation was the local partner of the Quintuple Helix Approach to Targeted Open Innovation in Energy, Water, Agriculture in the South Mediterranean Neighborhood – 5TOI_4EWAS. The project was funded by the EU’s Horizon 2020 program and focused on Targeted Open Innovation in energy, water and agriculture, societal challenges through a balanced innovation-friendly ecosystem in the Southern Mediterranean Neighborhood (SMN) based on quintuple helix and NEXUS approach.

The European Neighbourhood Instrument (ENI) came into force in 2014. It is the financial arm of the European Neighbourhood Policy, the EU’s foreign policy towards its neighbours to the East and to the South. It has a budget of €15.4 billion and provides the bulk of funding through a number of programmes. ENICBCMED, the Mediterranean Sea Basin Programme is the largest Cross-Border Cooperation (CBC) initiative implemented by the EU under the European Neighbourhood Instrument (ENI). The general objective of the Programme is to foster fair, equitable and sustainable economic, social and territorial development, which may advance cross-border integration and valorize participating countries’ territories and values.
Supporting green entrepreneurs to better access finance and market in the Mediterranean

The Green Impact MED Project – Positive Investments for Positive Impacts (GIMED) is a EU-funded project under the ENI-CBC Med Programme aiming at supporting green entrepreneurs to better access finance and market in the Mediterranean. Berytech Foundation is the official partner in Lebanon.

Turning wine-making waste into health products

Berytech Foundation is an implementing partner in Lebanon of the New Business opportunities & Environmental sustainability using MED GRAPE nanotechnological products – BESTMEDGRAPE project. The program aims to turn waste from winemaking into valuable and innovative commercial health products, supporting at the same time the creation of new businesses.

Eco-innovative entrepreneurs within the textile and clothing sector

STAND Up! is a new project funded under the ENI CBC Med Programme focusing on the support to eco-innovative entrepreneurs and enterprises within the textile and clothing sector. Berytech Foundation is an implementing partner in Lebanon.

Program duration: 2020 – 2022

Berytech Foundation is involved in the Nexus-Driven Open Labs for Competitive and Inclusive Growth in The Mediterranean – NEX-LABS program, which aims to identify and validate the contexts within European Union Mediterranean Partner Countries for better policies to support the technological transfer and commercialization of research results. This will be done through the implementation of gained experiences, as a result of the implementation of two nexus-driven Open Living Labs (NDOLLs). These NDOLLs will address the application of clean technologies for a sustainable and resilient production increase in the agri-food sector, based on a more efficient use of energy and water in the MPC region.

Support for the dairy value chain

Berytech is involved in the Transdairy Project, which aims to create two transborder living labs that will work to increase transfer and commercialization opportunities among research industry and SMEs providing products and services for the entire dairy value chain from field to fork (from initial steps of the value chain up to the consumer). One living lab will focus on the Biotechnology Key Enabling Technologies (it includes biosensors, byproducts reuse technologies, bioenergy, etc.), and one on the Information and Communication Key Enabling Technologies (it includes multiple aspects such as Internet of Things, Internet of Animals, Sensors Networks, management and logistics ICT tools, animal welfare, health and productivity monitoring, dairy processing monitoring, etc.) 

Program duration: 2020 – 2022

PRIMA – Partnership for Research and Innovation in the Mediterranean Area is financed through a combination of funding from PRIMA Participating States (currently €274 million), and a €220 million contribution from the EU through Horizon 2020, its research and innovation funding program (2014 – 2020).

Interactive platform gathering best practices focused on PRIMA SRIA priorities

Berytech is an implementing partner in Lebanon of the Participatory Hub for Effective Mapping, Acceleration and Capitalization (PHEMAC) of EU-MPC NEXUS best practice, aiming to develop and disseminate an interactive platform to profile best practices from previous projects and initiatives and those that are underway relating to the agricultural, water and food sectors in the Euro-Mediterranean area.

Program duration: 2019 – 2022

The Kingdom of The Netherlands supports programs that are aimed at strengthening the Lebanese social infrastructure and improving prospects for the Lebanese. Indeed, the current situation in Lebanon shows even more than before that innovation and job creation for youth are needed.

The ACT Smart (Agri-Food & CleanTech) Innovation Hub is a new out-of-the-box approach by Berytech funded by the Kingdom of The Netherlands and aimed at strengthening business advancement, economic growth and job creation in the Agri-food and Cleantech sectors in Lebanon.

Program duration: 2019 – 2022 

Berytech launched the Agrytech Innovation Hub in 2017 to develop businesses and create jobs in the Agri-food sector in Lebanon. The program aimed to stimulate innovators and entrepreneurs to put their creativity and energy to develop local solutions to agriculture and food challenges facing Lebanon and the world by applying a sector-wide approach for economic growth.

Program duration: 2016 – 2019

USAID is the world’s premier international development agency and a catalytic actor driving development results. USAID works to help lift lives, build communities, and advance democracy. USAID’s work advances U.S. national security and economic prosperity; demonstrates American generosity; and promotes a path to recipient self-reliance and resilience.

USAID awarded Berytech Foundation the implementation of the program “MENA Investment Initiative” to help alleviate the high unemployment rates, contribute to job creation, and ensure sustainable social development and economic growth. Berytech Foundation created IM Capital (Holding), a fully owned subsidiary, to implement the program and provide Matching Capital, Insurance Capital and Technical Assistance to Qualified Early-Stage Businesses and Qualified Early-Stage Investors in Lebanon.

Lebanon Investment Initiative

USAID awarded Berytech Foundation the implementation of the program “Lebanon Investment Initiative”, to improve investor and business access to capital, advance the development of the overall financial system with a focus on capital markets, and strengthen the overall competitiveness of the Lebanese economy. Berytech Foundation created a fully owned subsidiary IM Ventures (Holding) to implement the program and provide: 1) matching equity-based capital investments for Qualified Investors and Qualified Businesses; 2) 100% Cash Collateralized Investment Insurance for Qualified Investors; and 3) Technical Assistance for Qualified Investors and Qualified Businesses, 

Program duration: 2020 – 2024

SME Development Program

The Lebanon Enterprise Development (LED) is a five-year project funded by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) with the goal of increasing employment opportunities for Lebanese citizens. It is implemented by Chemonics International and has Berytech Foundation as business promotion partner for Beirut/Mount Lebanon, Bekaa and South Lebanon.

Project duration: 2018 – 2022

Berytech Foundation is managing the MENA Regional Innovation Hub supporting innovative SMEs working along the Water and Energy for Food nexus across the region, providing technical assistance and investment support mechanisms to scale their businesses. The aim is to impact Agriculture Practices, create jobs and support the communities and bottom of the pyramid access jobs and affordable healthy food. 

Program duration: 2020 – 2024

Berytech Foundation is providing incubation support for solid waste management startups and SMEs to develop and scale their solutions, to improve their economic and livelihood activities through the Solid Waste value chain, working with innovators, municipalities and other players to strengthen this sector, creating jobs and protecting the environment.

Program duration: 2020 – 2025

Aiming to advance stability and prosperity in the Middle East and North Africa region, the Middle East Partnership Initiative program supports governments and their citizens to achieve shared political, economic and stability objectives. The MEPI program responds to needs and emerging opportunities for citizens and organizations that target two core objectives: Participatory Governance and Economic Opportunity.

Social Entrepreneurship Accelerator Program

The Impact Rise social innovation program is designed and managed by Berytech Foundation and funded by the U.S.-Middle East Partnership Initiative to put ambitious startups, devoted experts and support partners on the road to growing sustainable and successful social ventures.

The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) is the United Nations’ global development network. It advocates for change and connects countries to knowledge, experience and resources to help people build a better life for themselves.

Women Economic Participation in North and Mount Lebanon (WEP) project

With funding from the Government of Canada and under the guidance and supervision of the United Nations Development Program within the framework of the Lebanon Host Communities Support Programme (LHSP), Berytech Foundation is a member of a consortium led by the Rene Mouawad Foundation to implement the Women Economic Participation in North and Mount Lebanon (WEP) project.

Mount Lebanon Youth Entrepreneurs Competition

In 2016, Berytech Foundation implemented the Mount Lebanon Youth Entrepreneurs Competition, a project that involved staging a business competition that supported local entrepreneurs in Mount Lebanon in establishing their startups.

The World Bank is an international financial institution that provides loans and grants to the governments of poorer countries for the purpose of pursuing capital projects.

Enhancing women’s economic opportunities

Under the Mashreq Gender Facility (MGF), the World Bank Group has partnered in 2020 with Berytech Foundation and the Lebanese League for Women in Business to provide capacity building in times of crisis for women who want to grow their businesses and enhance their business model, marketing, financing, and networking opportunities, as well as learn how to be resilient in the face of crisis.

Activities

As part of the World Bank’s work on technology entrepreneurship ecosystems, Berytech Foundation worked on three activities between 2015 and 2017: organizing knowledge exchanges between Chilean and Lebanese experts on entrepreneurship ecosystems; carrying out surveys to map the Lebanese tech entrepreneurs and startups founders; and organizing coding bootcamps to raise awareness on the importance of digital skills.

VentureWell is supporting delivery of the U.S. Department of State’s Global Innovation through Science and Technology (GIST) initiative, which empowers young innovators through networking, skills building, mentoring, and access to financing to develop startup solutions that address economic and development challenges.

Entrepreneurial Skills Building Program

Berytech Foundation has been awarded to create the GIST Innovation Hub in Lebanon, thus joining a vibrant network of programs that nurture the next generation of entrepreneurs and innovators through direct, on-the-ground training.

Program duration: 2016 – 2020

The Middle East Regional Directorate represents the Agence Universitaire de la Francophonie in the region. Established in Beirut since 1993, it runs a network of 89 members in 16 countries and has five establishments in 3 countries in the region.

Berytech has been partners with the Agence Universitaire de la Francophonie (AUF) to run the Femme Francophone Entrepreneur Competition in Lebanon since 2011. Every year, Berytech plays an active role in planning, implementing and disseminating the competition.

Berytech is partners with the Agence Universitaire de la Francophonie (AUF) in Lebanon in the Développement de l’entrepreneuriat étudiant au Liban – DEEL project, launched in 2017. The program aims at strengthening entrepreneurship and innovation in higher education to ultimately promote the emergence of companies with potential growth and employment.

Program Duration: 2017 – 2022

The United Nations Children’s Fund is a United Nations agency responsible for providing humanitarian and developmental aid to children worldwide.

The Generation of Innovation Leaders is a program by UNICEF designed to address the high unemployment rates among youth in Lebanon and their lack of access to the knowledge economy. Berytech Foundation is working with UNICEF under the GIL Program to establish and run digital fabrication labs, train Fab Lab Managers, and develop a curriculum and Train of Trainer material for the GIL Implementing Partners. Berytech Foundation has also organized Ecosystem Immersion workshops under the GIL Program.

WE4F is a joint international initiative of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), the European Union (EU), the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Government of the Netherlands, Sweden through the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (Sida), and the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID).

Water and Energy for Food Grand Challenge (WE4F) is in the Middle East and North Africa to promote local, sustainable, and innovative solutions for challenges in the water, energy, and agriculture sectors.

Program duration: 2019 – 2022

Google.org, Google’s philanthropic arm, supports non-profits that address humanitarian issues and apply scalable, data-driven innovation to solving the world’s biggest challenges.

Berytech joined Youth Business International’s Rapid Response and Recovery programme – funded by Google.org, to support struggling businesses during the covid-19 crisis.
Berytech has been appointed as a delivery partner of YBI in Lebanon and will now work to develop and deliver an urgent package of support to struggling local businesses. For this project, Berytech has developed the Helping SMEs Build Resilience program that will be conducted over 12 months. It will be targeted at SMEs across Lebanon to support them in coping with the numerous crisis situations.

SPARK develops higher education and entrepreneurship so that young ambitious people are empowered to lead their post-conflict societies into prosperity. SPARK supports existing small and medium enterprises (SMEs) to grow and create new job opportunities.

SPARK, with Berytech as the implementing partner, is supporting MSMEs in Lebanon with a combination of financial and technical support to adapt to Covid-19. Selected MSMEs will receive a cash grant and capacity building in the form of webinars and coaching sessions to increase the impact of SPARK financial support.

BMZ-logo

The Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (German: Bundesministerium für wirtschaftliche Zusammenarbeit und Entwicklung), abbreviated BMZ, is a cabinet-level ministry of the Federal Republic of Germany. Founded in 1961, the Ministry works to encourage economic development within Germany and other countries through international cooperation and partnerships.

The Food System Challenge is implemented by the World Food Programme (WFP) and Berytech through support from the German Federal Ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ).

The Food System Challenge aims to support Lebanese SMEs working across the agri-food value chain to sustain and improve local food production, transformation, and consumption.

SHAAMS is an EU-funded project, that aims at raising public awareness on solar energy to facilitate the take up and implementation of solar technologies in the Mediterranean countries. Strategic Hubs for the Acceleration of the Mediterranean Solar Sector. (Program duration: 2012 – 2016)
