Open Call for products to support the reconstruction of Beirut
Berytech, through its Fab Lab, is building a library of global open-source designs for furniture that can make a huge impact, while being easily and affordably produced using digital fabrication techniques on the ground in Beirut.
“We are rallying the global community of product developers, makers, designers and engineers to support the Berytech Fab Lab’s efforts to assist reconstruction in areas destroyed by the blast,” explains Wael Khalil, Berytech Fab Lab Manager.
The Berytech Fab Lab has partnered with Wikifactory, Makers for Good and Smart Impact to help a global effort to support the reconstruction efforts on the ground in Beirut.
The global maker community can help
Please share open-source designs for furniture that can help the effort (chairs, tables of all types, desks, shelves….). We are looking for sustainable furniture that uses the lowest amount of material in order to produce the largest number of products quickly and affordably using one standard board (2400mm x 1220mm). Your contributions will make a real difference locally and demonstrate what is possible globally.
“We have to use local materials. Unfortunately, the local currency is crashing and affordability is low, imagine the chaos here. We are supporting by offering to produce using our machines. Our main target in mind is the big shopbot that we usually use for furniture production. As for materials, we are looking into using plywood, 12, 18, 22 mm. The standard ones. We usually order those from local suppliers,” comments Wael.
What is our manufacturing capacity:
- CNC Router (min. milling bit diameter 6mm)
- Laser Cutting (biggest dimension 800mmx500mm)
- Finishing
What kind of projects we are looking for:
- Stools
- Tables
- Chairs
- Sofas/Couches
- Beds
- Walls
- Tv Stands
- Windows
- Doors
