èN Studio Design is a Beirut-based creative design hub. The brand designs and executes multi-functional products. The products are functional and tailored to simplify the modern, hectic lifestyle.
èN Bag collection is the first design brought to life by designer and founder Nancy Fata who chose multifunctional bags because she wanted to create something practical, stylish, and versatile. Nancy wanted to create a bag that could be used for work, play, travel, or multiple occasions. The multifunctional bag carries multiple detachable pockets which can be easily added or removed to keep everything you need organized, safe, and easy to carry. We talked to her about her innovation and her participation in the STAND Up! Program.
Q: What makes your solution special or unique?
A: The first multifunctional pouch I designed was for my dad who needed a practical pocket that holds his phone and glasses at the same time and that he can slide onto his belt. By creating multifunctional, modular bags with detachable pockets concept, I am launching a trend of bags that resonates with the Slow Fashion movement, reducing waste, promoting sustainability, and helping users save money in the long run. The bags are made from vegan leather and are made to last.
The detachable pocket system allows users to organize their items. Users can easily move the pocket from one bag to another, hold it separately, take it off completely to lighten the load or switch bags easily. The detachable pockets also make it easier to find items quickly, as users can separate items into different compartments which can also provide extra protection. This can be especially helpful when carrying electronic devices, valuable items, or items that could get damaged or leaked such as makeup.
Ultimately, we believe multifunctional bags are the perfect accessory for any lifestyle.
Q: Why did you apply to the program? What were you hoping to achieve when you applied to it?
A: I applied to the STAND Up! Access to Finance (A2F) program because I saw it as an opportunity to develop my financial literacy and gain valuable knowledge and skills as I have no clue about the subject. I gained a better understanding of Finance and improved my financial management.
So far, I restructured the way to convey the message to my audience which helps in better targeting my potential clients. I developed two new products to inspire clients and stress the multi-use of my product.
My ultimate Key Success Factor is to have a clear business direction and achieve my business goals effectively; Continuously elaborate my skills by applying to other programs and setting realistic goals and expectations to stay on track. Developing effective strategies and staying committed to staying focused.
I am already very satisfied and proud that the product is manufactured and sold. It took a lot of hard work and dedication to reach this stage. It taught me the importance of self-motivation and perseverance to achieve goals no matter how difficult they seem.
Q: What are the main challenges that you have faced so far? How did you overcome them?
A: Some of the biggest challenges I faced when starting my business were accessing capital, finding the right people (skilled artisans, raw material vendors…), and managing operations as I am a one-woman show. Additionally, I faced the challenge of understanding the legal aspects of running a business, marketing, and networking. After all, building and maintaining relationships with vendors, suppliers, and customers is an ongoing challenge.
I had to do several prototypes and meetings with different artisans to finally find the one that has the skill, design notion, and open-mindedness for new concepts and ideas.
Q: What is one thing you would have done differently throughout your journey?
A: Starting a business is always challenging and needs a lot of patience, maybe the only thing that I had to think more about is: Was is it the right time to start a business due to all the local tensions and economic situations which make it even more challenging to stay focused and motivated?
Q: What advice would you give an entrepreneur who is starting in your industry?
A: My advice to an entrepreneur starting in my or any other industry is to stay focused, be innovative, not be afraid to take risks, and learn from failure.
