Fruit Leather From Excess Apple Production

Eshmoon’s proposed project under the Food System Challenge is based on an innovation that was developed in 2020, involving the production of fruit leathers. It was tested in the market on a relatively small scale in the summer of 2021 with private-label customers.

With the program, Eshmoon aims to Increase fruit leather production from 200 kilograms a month to 13,000 kilograms a year in year two, increasing its income and also reducing the opportunity loss of the 25 fruit farmers that Eshmoon works with. The number is expected to become 33 in the first year of the project.

The Food System Challenge

The Food System Challenge is implemented by the World Food Programme (WFP) and Berytech through support from the German Federal Ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ).

The program’s main outcomes are enhanced food security, a well-functioning local food system, enhanced efficiency and resilience of cooperatives and SMEs working across different streams of the food systems, and increased employment opportunities, especially for women and vulnerable individuals.
