ZOOM IN: REMER, Regenerating Soil Biodiversity

REMER startup - Agrytech Program
The greatest achievement is how we were able to successfully develop REMER’s bio stimulant product, which has helped improve agricultural yields and reduce the need for chemical fertilizers.

What They Do

REMER is developing a soil inoculant that regenerates soil biodiversity, which leads to sustainable and ecological agriculture. This inoculant is without genetic manipulation and is physiologically compatible with all gardens and horticultural applications.

REMER’s solution works by utilizing effective microorganisms that cause the fermentation of organic matter present in the soil and release bioactive substances that directly benefit plants. Some of these benefits include an increase in soil fertility, better water retention, and other key agricultural benefits.

Startup Experience

“Our story began when Mario, the owner of NatBio Bakery, bought an imported bio stimulant he needed for his wheat fields but was defective. After seeking assistance from me, Margot his sister, a biologist with a deep interest in all things organic and ecological, I was able to create a similar product at home using rudimentary equipment.

Two years ago, we began producing REMER at home using rudimentary equipment for personal use. But with the emergence of the economic crisis in Lebanon, we started looking for ways to increase our income to provide for our family. We thought of selling our product to people around us like our neighbors, friends, and other interested people.

In just a few months, more people started using our product, and they were quite satisfied with the results. However, when we decided to start distributing it to farmers through local agricultural engineers, they were unable to promote our product as they were getting paid significant commission fees by big companies to promote their products instead.

With that being said, we were unable to match these offers having no money ourselves, so Mario decided to apply for the Agrytech program with the hope of gathering funding to buy the necessary equipment and move from artisanal production to industrialized production.

With the help of Berytech’s team, we developed our business plan which was a significant advancement in Lebanon’s agricultural chemicals field.

The Agrytech Accelerator program has helped us, not only financially, but also by allowing us to grow both personally and professionally. The work that is being done with us and our colleagues in other startups highlights the importance of organizations like Berytech during the absence of a real government in Lebanon and reminds us that we are not alone in this fight.

The greatest achievement is how we were able to successfully develop REMER’s bio stimulant product, which has helped improve agricultural yields and reduce the need for chemical fertilizers.

A lesson that we have learned from this experience is the importance of persevering in the face of challenges such as lack of access to laboratories, limited financial resources, and the overall financial crisis in Lebanon which affected consumer purchasing power.

After finishing the Agrytech Program, our long-term goals will be focused on expanding the distribution network of our products to a wider market, hopefully by exporting abroad. In addition to this, we are aiming to raise awareness about the benefits of our product and continue to research and develop new and innovative solutions for the environment.”
